GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) is going to sound its war bugle (gana hungkar) in all district headquarters on Saturday in protest against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). It was on December 12, 2019 five people were killed in police firing in Guwahati during the agitation against the CAA.

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "We had to put on hold our agitation against the CAA due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Now on, our war against the CAA will continue in streets throughout the State and in the Supreme Court of India. We've already filed a case against the CAA in the apex Court. We'll argue against the Act in the next hearing.

"The BJP government enacted the CAA only for its political gain. The government has divided Hindu and Muslim foreigners on the basis of their faiths. The Act gives citizenship to Hindu foreigners who entered Assam till December 31, 2014. This is clear violation of the Assam Accord. We won't budge from our stand – any foreigners, be them Hindus or Muslims, entering Assam after March 25, 1971 should be detected and deported."

The AASU units of Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts took out torchlight processions on Friday night. This morning the Dibrugarh University (DU) unit of the AASU started a 16-hour hunger strike.

The All Guwahati Students' Union (AGSU) is also going to hold a protest meeting in Guwahati on Saturday when they will pay tribute to the martyrs. The artiste fraternity will also be roped in the agitation at the AGSU meeting.
