DHUBRI: A central committee team of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), on Sunday visited the Indo-Bangladesh border of the Dhubri district and expressed their dissatisfaction over the unfenced riverine borders.
Under the leadership of AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, the AASU team travelled from Pillar No 1001 to 1031 of the border. Members of the team said that they were shocked to see that the entire Indo-Bangladesh border abutting the river Gangadhar in the Binnachara area near Golakganj, remains open till date.
The students' body accused the Centre and the state government of cheating the Assamese people by falsely promising to seal the borders.
Talking to the media, Baruah expressed resentment over the fact that even 37 years after signing of the Assam Accord, one of its major clauses of sealing the Indo-Bangladesh borders is yet to be implemented. He accused the government of having no interest in protecting the Indo-Bangladesh border.
Baruah further alleged that the quality of fencing materials used in Assam was of much inferior quality than that used along the Indo-Pakistan borders.
The leader of the students' body also stated that the AASU had warned the nation over 40 years ago about the outcome of open borders in the Dhubri district and now the Chief Minister of Assam himself is stating that the Jihadi activities in the state are increasing alarmingly.
The AASU stated that if the Centre had sealed the borders on time, then such a threat from the fundamentalists would not have cropped up.
Baruah also alleged that all the promises that the Centre and the state government are making about sealing borders and different technologies that are being used to prevent illegal migration are false and are only on pen and paper.
He demanded that the government should use scientific methods to immediately fence the riverine border.
