GUWAHATI: The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) has welcomed the draft delimitation of the constituencies in the state. The organization said that this is a good sign as the representation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will increase in the legislature.

AATS secretary general Aditya Khakhlari said that the representation of the tribal people will increase to match their population ratio in the state. It is important to note that the Scheduled Tribes (Plains) will have two, and the Scheduled Tribes (Hills) and Scheduled Castes will have one more reserved seat each in the State Legislative Assembly.

He said, “We requested the Election Commission regarding the increase in our representation in the state Assembly on March 27, 2023. We are glad that the numbers have increased. Since the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, all the legislative assembly constituencies and Lok Sabha constituencies within it must follow the reservation rules as per the Constitution.”

According to the 1971 census, the Scheduled Tribes (Plains) had 11, the Scheduled Tribes (Hills) had 5, and the Scheduled Castes had 8 seats reserved, respectively. But the 2001 census pointed out an increase in their population.
