GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh stated on Friday that the law will take its course in the cash-for-job scam of the Assam Public Services Commission (APSC).

He said legal action and departmental proceedings are the two ways in which action will be taken against the erring officers who adopted unfair means to get selected in the Combined Competitive Examinations (CCE) 2013, conducted by the APSC. One of the two ways is action by the police, or the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in this case, acting on prosecutable evidence. The second is departmental proceedings drawn up against the erring officers by their respective departments concerned in the state government, the DGP said.

“There is no provision for direct dismissal,” the DGP said. The departments concerned would conduct their departmental proceedings, and the inquiry officer would then give a recommendation on which the state government would take action against the officers.

He added that the SIT is conducting its probe into the scam, and the guilty would be punished according to law.

The SIT had directed three officers—Dhiraj Kumar Jain, ACS, Akashee Duwarah, ACS and Sukanya Das, APS—to appear before it today, but they did not do so.

On Friday, the DGP also sent a message to the cadres of ULFA (I) willing to surrender. He said the cadres in the jungle should come out. He added that there is a vast difference between Assam of today and that of earlier. The cadres should come back to the mainstream of society and help in the development effort, GP Singh said.
