GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the prominent regional party in the state, will step into the 39th year of its foundation tomorrow. On the eve of the 39th foundation day, the party pledged to go ahead with the perfect blend of old and young blood. The party will sound its Lok Sabha poll bugle tomorrow from Golaghat, where the regional party emerged in 1985 after the historic Assam Accord.

Speaking to The Sentinel, party president Atul Bora said, “The youth play a significant role in politics now. They are more conscious and visionary. The young generation evolves into mature leaders to take the lead in the development or making of the nation. The AGP has been on a roller-coaster ride since 1985. In the changed situation, we have decided to take the lead by taking the new generation along. The AGP was formed at Golaghat Commerce College on October 14, 1985. This college had its student body elections recently, and 13 of the 14 candidates for the AGP came out winners. The candidates of the student wing of the AGP (Asom Chatra Parishad) have also come up as winners in many colleges in the state this year. This is a reminder that the state still has takers of regional politics, even among the students”.

Recalling the sacrifice of the 860 martyrs of the Assam Agitation, Bora said, “The AGP will never forget their supreme sacrifices. We are paying tribute to the martyrs on the eve of the foundation day of the party. We are conscious that we have made some mistakes in our journey since 1985. Our motto is not to repeat past mistakes.”

On the party’s alliance, Bora said, “Some sections criticise us for allying with the BJP. However, the alliance is the key to politics in the entire country. Despite allying with the BJP, we have not shrugged off the ideology of regionalism. The Lok Sabha poll is barely a few months away. We hope to get the blessing of the people of Assam.”
