Assam-Arunachal Boundary: Governor Mishra Hopeful Of Solution

Mishra said that with the boundary disputes being resolved, the age-old amity among the people of the neighboring states would reinforce.

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr BD Mishra expressed optimism that the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary disputes will be solved amicably with both the states' chief ministers working seriously in that direction.

At a meeting with his Assam counterpart Prof Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhawan in Guwahati during the day, Mishra said that with the boundary disputes being resolved, the age-old amity among the people of the neighbouring states would reinforce.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, while attending the 36th Statehood Day celebrations of Arunachal Pradesh at Yupia near here on February 26 last, announced that the Assam government was ready to do all to resolve the issue so that the age-old cordial relations between the neighbouring states continue.

"government-level talks are going on between the two states. From April, we will start the process seriously through appropriate dialogue at the ground level to reach a logical conclusion," Sarma announced during the event.

The two Governors also discussed various avenues where the people of both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam can work together for their mutual benefit. They suggested more cultural and educational exchange programmes for promoting the cultural richness of the region for the youth of the states.

Brig Mishra and Prof Mukhi shared their thoughts on the preservation of the natural environment, flora and fauna and archaeological assets and at the same time emphasized expediting the implementation process of developmental projects, an official communiqué informed here.

Meanwhile, the recommendation of the High Powered Ministerial Committee (HPMC) on the Arunachal-Assam interstate boundary was unanimously finalized today by the stakeholders in the HPMC's final meeting.

The meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Home Minister Bamang Felix at the State Banquet Hall, Niti Vihar, here and was attended by representatives of all political parties in the state, representatives of the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF), student leaders, and deputy commissioners of 12 districts sharing boundaries with Assam.

The HPMC's recommendation was drawn following extensive ground exercises conducted by the deputy commissioners of 12 districts sharing boundaries with Assam during which all disputed boundaries were physically visited and reviewed in consultation with political leaders, student leaders, NGOs, public, etc., of the area.

Today's meeting also had an exhaustive discussion and deliberation on the documents submitted by the deputy commissioners concerned and later unanimously finalized for recommendations to the state government.
