GUWAHATI: In a major push to integrate and enhance veterinary education in the state, the Assam government has decided to form a new university by merging the veterinary colleges in the state and the fishery college at Raha.
The newly founded university will be named Assam Veterinary and Fishery University. It is to be noted that the veterinary colleges and the fishery college are currently under the Assam Agriculture University.
A bill for the creation of the new university was passed on the fourth day of the Autumn Session of the Assam Assembly on Thursday. The bill named Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Bill, 2024, was introduced in the House by Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora.
On the fourth day, the House also passed the following bills: The Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024; The Assam (Temporarily Settled Areas) Tenancy (Amendment) Bill, 2024; The Assam Skill University (Amendment) Bill, 2024; The Assam Moran Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024; The Matak Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2024; and The Assam Urban Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Bill, 2024.
Meanwhile, earlier yesterday, the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024 was passed in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday. This new bill makes the registration of all marriages and divorces compulsory for people belonging to the Muslim community in the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called the day "historic" for the state adding that “This Act will now make it mandatory to register marriages with the Govt and cannot contravene the legal age of marriage of 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. It will also act as a strict deterrent against teenage pregnancy and improve the overall growth of our girls."
