CORONA PATIENTS WITH CO-MORBIDITIES 'Aggressive treatments commence in Assam'

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: "Assam has commenced aggressive treatments of middle-aged corona patients with co-morbidities," said the Chairman of the 'State Death Audit Committee' for COVID-19, Dr Anup Kumar Barman, who is also the Director of Medical Education, Assam.

Talking to The Sentinel hereon Tuesday, Dr Barman elaborated, "This decision has been taken as we have noticed a recent rise in casualty especially among them. Earlier, the casualty rate was high among the elderly people.

"Of late, many in two middle-aged groups have fallen victims to coronavirus across Assam. This is with respect to the 45 to 55 age group as well those in the 55 to 65 years of age. Hence, we have changed the treatment strategy. Now, aggressive treatments including the plasma therapy among others are being tendered to these high-risk patients even if they have mild symptoms. Such high-risk patients are those suffering from other co-morbidities like long-standing diabetics, hypertension, kidney failure, liver problems, and cancer among others.

"According to the earlier system, the COVID-19 treatments were started only after the moderate symptoms were diagnosed even with respect to such high-risk patients. There has also been a high casualty rate among COVID-19 patients who had already suffered kidney failure and were under dialysis.

"Under normal circumstances, there is low mortality rate among COVID-19 patients. However, the rate rises if they suffer from other co-morbidities.

"The majority of COVID-19 patients across the State now have respiratory problems. Many among them suffer from fever and/or cough.

He further said, "Assam is presently doing well in the COVID-19 treatment scenario. Now, the State has the lowest coronavirus-related mortality rate. Till Monday, the COVID toll in Assam was 109."
