GUWAHATI: The State Excise Commissioner has directed the Excise Superintendents of all the districts to ensure that the liquor retailers to remove hoardings of liquor brands in the outlets, and to ensure that the retailers do not put up any such hoardings in future.

Commissioner of Excise department Rakesh Kumar told The Sentinel, “Such hoardings promoting liquor brands is a violation of the Excise rules and instructions. So, I’ve ordered my officers to instruct all licensees to remove any kind of advertisement or promotional pictures of liquor brands from their signboards. I will review the scenario very soon.”

Across Assam, there are more than 2,000 liquor retailers and 500 bars. Sources informed that the bars will also have to remove such promotional hoardings in the near future. It has also been learned that due to a nexus between the retailers and a section of Excise officials, flouting of norms have been openly taking place.
