GUWAHATI: There has been no let up in the flood situation in Assam. The first wave of floods in the State has affected 1,538 villages in 19 districts and subdivisions so far. Two persons have died, one from drowning and another in landslides. Both deaths were reported from the Nalbari district.
Following incessant rain, Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari and the Brahmaputra (at Neematighat) rivers are flowing above the danger level. Nearly 4.88 lakh people have been affected by floods. According to the flood report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Bajali is the worst affected. The other affected areas include Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sonitpur.
A total of 140 relief camps have been set up and around 35,142 people are taking shelter in these relief camps, including 545 pregnant women and lactating mothers. According to government officials, food, medicine and other essentials are being provided to the people.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on high alert in all the areas across the State that are prone to floods. The flood waters have breached embankments and damaged dykes and both PWD and PMGSY roads.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for the next two days and also forecast heavy rain in numerous regions.
