GUWAHATI: Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above their danger levels at various places, even as the flood situation has improved to an extent in the state.
In the past 24 hours, five persons died due to floods in the state. The death toll due to floods and landslides this year increased o 179. Two persons died in Nagaon. One each died in Karimganj, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar.
Till this afternoon, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Dhubri, Tezpur and Nematighat; Kopili at Dharamtul; Disang at Nanglamuraghat and the Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang).
According to ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) flood bulletin, 65 revenue circles of 26 districts are under the grip of floods. The floods affected around 18,35,551 people in 1,618 villages. Around 2,78,060 people are taking shelter in 365 relief camps in the state. Over two lakh people are in relief camps in the Cachar district alone.
Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, forecasted medium rainfall at many places in Assam in the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning, is likely in a few places.
Meanwhile, the inter-ministerial team from Union Home Ministry wound up the flood assessment and left for New Delhi today.
