GUWAHATI: The Assam government has allocated Rs 145 crores for the overall development of the BatadravaThan — the birthplace of SrimantaSankardev. The 'Batadrava Than' is a historically and culturally significant neo-Vaishnavite epicenter in the Nagaon district. The project will be initially started at the 136 bighas of land of the Than, that was made encroachment-free recently.

A prime objective of this ambitious project is to also build up the site as a hub of tourism, education and skill development.

The PWD (Building) – recently renamed as 'LokanirmanBibhag' — has already prepared the detailed report of this project and also issued the work order.

Department sources informed that the project will have several components including the typical 'Monikut' (the conical-shaped outer representation of a Vaishnavitecentre), and the 'Guru Axaan' (the (mentor's seat). The life journey of SrimantaSankardev — the founder of neo-Vaishnavism in Assam – will be vividly depicted at the site.

The site will also have a museum, a guest house, and an auditorium equipped with the state-of-art technology.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Batadrava MLA Angoorlata Deka along with PWD officials inspected the site.

Talking to The Sentinel, MLA Deka said, "We had plans to commence the project earlier. However due to the prevailing pandemic-induced situation, the project was deferred. The work will start soon."

Meanwhile, sources informed that Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal will lay the foundation stone of the project. Finance Minister HimantaBiswaSarma will also grace the occasion.
