GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has moved the ‘Director of Economic and Vigilance’ with the request to register an FIR against former state NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela against the alleged misappropriation of funds in NRC update. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this before the media today.

When the media asked him about the CAG report on the anomalies of Rs 260 crore in NRC update, and Hajela wanted VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme), the Chief Minister said, “He is a government officer. If he doesn’t want to work in Assam, why should we pay him salaries? He is free to opt for VRS. However, when the police will call him, he will have to come. We have already referred his case to the Director of Economic and Vigilance for registration of an FIR. The VRS and the case are different subjects. If he opts for VRS, it will be a win for the Assamese. That will prove that we have been able to make him opt for VRS. Abhijit Sarma (APW) would deserve thanks for that.”

Soon after the publication of the NRC in 2019, Hajela went to inter-state deputation to Madhya Pradesh following directive from the Supreme Court of India. His term for deputation expired recently and the Government of Madhya Pradesh relieved him on March 31, 2023.
