GUWAHATI: Gaon panchayat, Zila Parishad and anchalik panchayat members now have reason to cheer. The Assam Government has decided to pay their monthly remuneration under the devolution grant of the 6th Assam State Finance Commission.

As per the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994, the elected members of gaon panchayats, zila parishads and anchalik panchayats are entitled to monthly remuneration which must be paid through the own resources of the gaon panchayats, zila parishads and anchalik panchayats. However, in Assam, the gaon panchayats, zila parishads and anchalik panchayats have not been able to generate their own revenue due to various reasons. So now, the Assam Government has decided to pay the monthly remuneration of the elected members of the gaon panchayats, zila parishads and anchalik panchayats.

State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass told media persons today that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has given his nod to this proposal. So now, the elected members will get their remuneration on a regular basis through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. Around 23,204 members of gaon panchayats, 413 members of zila parishads and 2,167 members of anchalik panchayats will be benefitted.
