Assam government's commercial tax collection increase by 18 percent in 2021-22

The State government’s commercial tax collection increased by around 18 per cent in fiscal 2021-22 despite a partial lockdown in the state during the financial year.

GUWAHATI: The State government's commercial tax collection increased by around 18 per cent in fiscal 2021-22 despite a partial lockdown in the state during the financial year. The collection of state GST (Goods and Services Tax) alone was over Rs 16,000 crore.

According to official sources, partial lockdowns marred fiscal 2021-22 for six months. However, the departments' efforts kept the revenue collection above a benchmark.

Departments like Excise, Transport, Forest etc., also made significant progress in tax collection. Revenue amounting to over Rs 1,000-crore came from the Transport Department alone and over Rs 1,900 crore from the Excise department. The increase in state GST revenue collection in fiscal 2021-22 was 23 per cent, and that of non-GST revenue collection was around 9 per cent.

According to sources, the total revenue collection in the state in fiscal 2015-16 was around Rs 12,800 crore. It increased to around Rs 19,032 crore in fiscal 2021-22.

Per capita income and per capita debt burden generally make people perplexed. The per capita income in the state in fiscal 2015-16 was Rs 16,817, and it increased to Rs 95,309 (estimated) in fiscal 2020-21. On the other hand, the per capita debt burden was Rs 10,760 in 2015-16, and it increased to Rs 23,611 in fiscal 2020-21. In the past five years, the government took Rs 72,773 crore loan from various sources. During the same period, the State Government received Rs 2,26,861-crore central funds.
