Assam has highest number of road accidents in Northeast: Report

GUWAHATI: Assam had the highest number of 7,023 road accidents in 2022 among the North Eastern states, with 2,994 persons killed, although both numbers marked a decrease over the figures in 2021.

This was revealed in a report published by the Research Wing of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The number of road accidents in 2022 marked a small decrease from that of 2021, which stood at 7411, with a change of -388. The rank of Assam as a state in the total number of road accidents stood at 16.

It is significant to note that the total number of road accidents in NE in 2022 was 9412, down from the total of 9754 in 2021. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland are the states that saw a decrease in the number of accidents in 2022 compared to 2021. The states of Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura, on the other hand, marked an increase in the total number of road accidents in 2022 over the figure for 2021.

In another calculation of state-wise deaths in the report, the total number of persons killed in road accidents in Assam during 2022 stood at 2,994, with a rank of 18th among all states in the country. Calculated on a per-lakh basis, the number of persons killed in road accidents in Assam was 8.5 per lakh of population in 2022.

Notably, the number of deaths in road accidents in Assam in 2022 has decreased from 3036 deaths in 2021.

Calculated on a state-to-state basis, the share of Assam in the total number of accidents in the country in 2022 was 1.8. For comparison, the share of Arunachal Pradesh stood at 0.1, the report stated.
