GUWAHATI: Though the newly launched AJP (Assam Jatiya Parishad) has already started its organizational activities at the grassroots level, the party will launch its political activities formally after its first State-level convention at the fag-end of November. Then, the AJP will also approach the ECI (Election Commission of India) for registration, informed party sources.

The convention will form a full-fledged central committee of the newly formed political party. There are speculations that a few of the AASU leaders will join the AJP during the student body's conference. There are also reports that several former leaders of the AASU, and the AJYCP besides a few leaders of also the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) are in close touch with the AJP.

The new regional political party is planning to contest in at least 100 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections.

The driving force of the party will be: 'Assam first, always and ever'. The party will work on the principle of 'Ghare Ghare Ami' (We are in every household in Assam), informed AJP sources.

This regional party backed by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) was constituted in Guwahati on September 14.

Mentionably, the AJP is the second regional political party to be constituted with active participation of the AASU – the first being the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) formed at Golaghat town in 1985 following signing of the historic Assam Accord that very year.

Notably, the AJP convention will be held after the forthcoming four-day AASU's general conference at Duliajan.

Meanwhile, AASU Lurinjyoti Gogoi told The Sentinel, "AASU's four-day general conference will be held from November 18. The new executive body will be constituted on the last day of the conference on November 21.

He added, "The conference will deliberate on various socio-political issues confronting the people of the State."

When asked as to whether some of the AASU leaders will join the AJP, Gogoi simply said, "Wait and see.'"

The last general conference of AASU was held at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district.
