GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K. Sangma took some key decisions to build confidence among the fringe dwellers of the two states and to resolve boundary disputes as fast as possible.

The meeting took place in a conducive atmosphere at Koinadhora, here in Guwahati. The two chief ministers agreed to finalize the post and boundary lines by December 31, 2023, in the first six areas of differences already sorted out. The meeting had a detailed discussion on the remaining six disputed areas and made considerable progress in three of them. The two chief ministers asked their respective regional committees to arrive at a conclusion as soon as possible.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister said, "We have decided to hand over the Mukroh incident to the CBI. The inquiry by the judicial commission will also continue. We will request the CBI register the case at a neutral place, neither in Assam nor in Meghalaya. We (the two chief ministers) will have a joint visit to the Khanduli and Psiar areas where border skirmishes took place recently."

Sangma said, "We have also agreed to deploy the CRPF as a neutral force, replacing the state police forces in certain border areas, to build the confidence of the people. Both governments will continue to work wholeheartedly to resolve the border disputes."
