Assam no longer safe passage for drug traffickers, says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

DIPHU/GOLAGHAT: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam would no longer remain a safe passage for drug traffickers.

The Chief Minister attended a programme each at Diphu and Golaghat organized by the Assam Police on Saturday to dispose of drugs worth several crores of rupees seized during the operation to make "Drugs Mukta Assam".

The Chief Minister set on fire a portion of the drugs seized by the Assam Police.

The burnt drugs include 11.88 kg Morphine, 2.89 kg Crystal Meth, 3.47 kg Heroin, 102.91 kg cannabis and 2,03,384 tablets.

Chief Minister Sarma said that the State government adopted zero-tolerance against drugs as it has adversely affected many families, posing a threat to the future of the young generation. He said that though earlier drug dealers used Assam as a transit route, gradually it emerged as a big market.

The Chief Minister further said that despite stringent action, drug dealers continue to work in connivance with some evil elements within the system.

Considering the nefarious design, the Chief Minister said that the government has given full operational freedom to the police within the ambit of the law to act firmly and decisively against drug dealers to rid the society of this menace. He also said that the number of drugs seized could be only 10 per cent of what is coming to the State. The drugs that go through the State will be worth Rs 3,000 crore.

Hailing Assam Police personnel for their spirited operations against drugs the Chief Minister said that Assam no longer remains a safe passage for the drug traffickers. He also said that the flames of the drugs consigned would send across a positive message throughout the State for a drug-free State.

"If we want to make a prosperous Assam, we have to make the State drug and disease free," he said.

The Chief Minister said that drugs are affecting the social fabric of the state and so there is no question of showing sympathy towards drug dealers. The CM also said that the government is working to cut the supply network and stop the consumption of drugs to save families and the future generation.

The Chief Minister also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of Manipur and Nagaland for their support in this fight against drugs.

The Chief Minister further informed that fulfilling its promise for the development of Karbi Anglong, the government has already announced a state university in the budget apart from setting up a commando battalion in the district.

In Golaghat, the Chief Minister presented cheques to the beneficiaries of the Golaghat district who lost their husbands in the Covid-19 pandemic. He also said that on August 15, 2021, the Government would give Rs 1 lakh to each of the next of kin of those who died of Covid-19, a press release each from Diphu and Golaghat said.
