Assam Police arrested two more for siphoning Hawala money

GUWAHATI: West Guwahati Police on Friday arrested a relative each of SI Mubarak Ali and SI Anurag Bora in connection with the siphoning of Hawala money. According to police sources, the police recovered Rs 17.50 lakh kept hidden in the house of a woman, Sabira Begum, at Baihata Chariali. Upon questioning the woman, it was established that SI Mubarak Ali kept the cash there. It also came to the knowledge of the police that SI Anurag Bora kept Rs 5 lakh hidden under the floor of the house of his aunt, Popita Gogoi, at Dergaon. The police recovered the cash today. With these two women falling into the net, the number of arrests in the Hawala money-siphoning case has increased to seven.

Yesterday, city police nabbed five people, including a journalist and two sub-inspectors of police, while recovering an amount of Rs 37.8 lakh that was spirited away from two hawala operators hailing from Rajasthan.

The police arrested Taufiquddin Ahmed, a journalist claiming to work for a satellite channel, sub-inspectors Mubarak Ali and Anurag Bora of Bharalumukh Police Station, along with Khairul Haque and Little Khan, on Thursday.

It should be mentioned here that, on November 21, a police team acted on the information regarding suspected persons staying at a rented house in a building belonging to Md. Jamir Uddin of MS Road, Athgaon, under the Bharalumukh police station. Subsequently, a Bharalumukh police team conducted a search of the premises. The team found two persons in the house, namely Devkaran Sen of Ganv Kherja Uttarada, in Churu district in Rajasthan, and Manoj Kumar of Saravagi Ki Bagichi, under Lachhamangarh police station in Bhanipura district of Rajasthan. The police recovered a staggering amount of Rs 1,69,70,000 (nearly Rs 1.7 crore).

The police on Friday produced all seven accused in the CJM Court, which sent them to three-day police remand.

According to sources, two police personnel, a journalist and a police informer, took away a bag of cash from the house before the arrival of the police team.
