GUWAHATI: The state government is going to replace CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel, deployed for security duty in all state government institutions, with Assam Police personnel in phases starting in April next year.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this at the induction programme for 1,861 recruits who completed their training at Dergaon Police Academy recently.
The Chief Minister said, "The State Government has decided to replace the CRPF personnel on security duty in all vital institutions in the state, like the Secretariat, Raj Bhawan, DC offices, SP offices, etc., with Assam Police battalions. Our motto is to take the Assam Police Force to a zero-vacancy level. We will start the process of advertising another 5,000 posts in the Assam Police next month. In the past two years, the increased action of the state police force has brought down the crime rate in the state. The state had 1.33 lakh cases registered in 2021, and the number of cases registered till August 2023 is just 45,000. The rate of filing charge sheets by the police was 45.2 percent in 2021, and the rate has increased to 54.27 percent this year so far. Likewise, the conviction rate was 5.6 percent in 2021, and it has risen to 15.15 percent in 2023 so far. Our target is to raise the conviction rate up to 20 percent next year."
Addressing the newly inducted police personnel, the Chief Minister said, "Think thrice before baton-charging a poor person. This is because police personnel are the saviours of the poor. You need to work with the motto: The courts are for the rich, and the Assam police personnel are for the poor".
The Chief Minister said that people with obesity cannot continue working in the state police department. "The government will offer VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) to such police personnel following the government procedure," he said.
