GUWAHATI: The State Cabinet decided that every employee of the State government will have to serve for three to five years in a remote area in his service tenure under the scheme, Sugam to Durgam (accessible to inaccessible places). The Cabinet has directed the Chief Secretary to frame the necessary rules for the implementation of the scheme.

Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting today, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, Generally, many employees are reluctant to go to remote and inaccessible areas, and that deprives the people of such areas from government services. To do away with this tendency among the employees, the Cabinet has approved this scheme.”

The Cabinet approved the Assam Road Network Master Plan 2023 to smooth road connectivity in the state. A total of 18,421 km of roads, including 4673 km of national highways, 5120 km of state highways, and 8638 km of major district roads, will be developed under this plan. These roads will be constructed in three categories: short-term (five years), medium-term (ten years), and long-term (20 years).

The Cabinet today approved 113 seats in universities, 292 seats in polytechnic institutes, and 119 seats in engineering institutes in the state reserved for the six ethnic groups.
