Assam: Rs 4,000 crore National Highway project from Baihata to Tezpur planned

The proposed four-lane national highway will have five bypasses at Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dhekiajuli, and Mission Chariali.

Dispur sends inspection report to MoRTH for approval

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has forwarded the draft inspection report and quality assurance plan to the government of India for the construction of a four-lane national highway project from Baihata Chariali of Kamrup district to Mission Chariali of Tezpur in Sonitpur district.

Presently, the highway running from Baihata Chariali to Mission Chariali in Tezpur is a two-lane one. But due to traffic congestion and planning for the future, in view of the large volume of traffic on that stretch of highway, the Assam government has decided to construct the four-lane national highway in consultation with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). It is estimated that the whole project, with a total length of 122 km, will cost approximately Rs 4,000 crore.

For this proposed project, the state government had appointed a consultant, Marc Technocrates Pvt. Ltd., in JV with Bloom Companies LLC, in association with Shreya Infra Consultants Pvt. Ltd. After conducting the field survey of the proposed project, the consultant submitted the draft inspection report and quality assurance plan, which have been scrutinized by the state PWD and forwarded to the Ministry for approval.

According to state PWD (NH Works) sources, the project is named: 4 lane of NH 15 from Baihata Chariali (km 0.00) to Start Mangaldoi Bypass (km 28), connecting NH-15 to NH-27 (old NH-31) (missing link) with Junction design, and 4 lane of NH-15 from Mangaldoi (excluding Mangaldoi bypass) (km 42) to Mission Chariali (km 135) under Rangia NH Division.

The proposed four-lane national highway will have five bypasses: Baihata Chariali, of length 4.654 km; Sipajhar, of length 6.680 km; Kharupetia, of length 6.675 km; Dhekiajuli, of length 4.892 km; and Mission Chariali, of length 6.456 km. In addition to the bypasses, there will be five flyovers and forty-three bridges proposed to be constructed on that stretch of NH. Of the forty-three bridges, eleven are major bridges, and the remaining thirty-two are minor bridges. There will also be a total of eleven vehicular underpasses proposed to be built at Bezera Chowk, Dumunichowki Chowk, Narikoli mandir, Dhula, Tangi Chariali, Thelamara-l, Thelamara-ll, Kaoimari, Pithakhowa, Bihaguri, and ITBP.

The stipulated completion period for the proposed national highway is 108 months from the start date.

According to PWD sources, land acquisition for the project will be required, and this will be started after approval of the project from the government of India.

For this project to be completed, it will be necessary to construct a four-lane Mangaldoi bypass. This stretch of the NH, comprising the Mangaldoi bypass, will be constructed under a different project by the state government.
