GUWAHATI: Poor and inconsistent attendance mark the government and provincialized schools in the state. This is what the Shiksha Setu portal has revealed.

According to the Shiksha Setu portal, the state has a total of 48,42,383 students, with 45,63,854 (94 percent) of them enrolled in as many as 44,507 schools. The districts reporting attendance of students continuously below average are Karbi Anglong, Udalguri, Barpeta, Baksa, Sivasagar, Morigaon, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj, Charaideo, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tinsukia, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, etc. The districts showing attendance of students above average are Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Darrang, Nagaon, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, etc. The attendance of students in Kamrup (M) and Kamrup districts is also not satisfactory.

According to the portal, the attendance of students on September 20 was only 48 percent, 51 percent on September 21, and 56 percent on September 22.

On September 28, the attendance was 62.1 percent—28,33,439 of 48,42,383 students were present.

The portal has revealed that the districts that perform better on HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) and HS (Higher Secondary) examinations have reported better student attendance. Poor student attendance is attributed to school dropouts in the state to a great extent. The Centre takes the high dropout rate in the state to every PAB (Project Approval Board) meeting every year, and each time the PAB asks the State School Education Department to lower the dropout rate. If the poor attendance of students remains unchecked in the state, the high dropout rate will continue to persist.

Circles concerned speculate that improper implementation of various education schemes and projects in the state might have led to the poor attendance of students in the state.
