Assam: Siu-Ka-Pha Award to Padmashri D.N. Bezboruah

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government made an announcement to confer the Siu-Ka-Pha Award, a national award, for the year 2023 on Padmashri D.N. Bezboruah, the founder Editor of The Sentinel, an English daily, and former president of the Editors Guild of India. After the Cabinet meeting at Tinsukia today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made this announcement.

The State Government will confer the award on the veteran journalist on Shilpi Divas, January 17, 2024, at a function. The award carries a citation, an angabastra and Rs 3 lakh.

Born in 1933 in Jorhat, Padmashri Bezboruah had his Master’s from Britain. He joined The Sentinel as its Founder Editor in 1983. He was also associated with Prantik, an Assamese magazine. He has several translation works, including Mrityunjay of Jnanpith awardee Dr. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya, and The Cavern and other Stories of Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia, to his credit. He also translated some works of Xahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua.

He received several other awards, including the Nachiketa Samman from Panchajanya, the B.D. Goenka Award, etc.

The Assam Government gives away this national award in memory of Swargadeo Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha every year.
