Five state colleges will get university status in 2 years: CM

GUWAHATI: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Saturday that there are plans to make Assam a "laboratory" for a unique "caste, tribe, and language-based education system".
Speaking at the inauguration of the North-East Education Conclave, 2021 in Guwahati, the Union minister said that the northeastern states are a powerhouse of 180 languages that is a reason to implement new education measures.
"The north-eastern region has a rich diversity of languages. The northeastern states have 180 regional languages, and we want Assam to become a laboratory for a caste, tribe, and language-based education system. The Government of India will prioritize every resource to achieve this," the Union minister said.
The Union Minister further said that the education sector in India was undergoing an unprecedented transformation and the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) introduced by the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims at preparing the youth to be future-ready, socially aware, global citizens of the 21st century.
"NEP-2020 is a visionary approach to transform the education landscape of the country and to achieve the realistic goal and to percolate its ripple effects to the grassroots. The North East Education Conclave aims at discussing and deliberating on various aspects of NEP-2020 that will help in creating a roadmap for the north-eastern region and to design strategies for its successful implementation," Pradhan said while lauding the State Education Department and Shankardev Education & Research Foundation (SERF) for its initiative to organize the country's first of its kind education conclave.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the NEP-2020 has allowed going beyond mark sheet to strive for knowledge that will make India more powerful, take the country to greater heights, empower students and offer them opportunities to grow. He added that the two-day deliberation would result in finalizing a roadmap for implementation of NEP in the region while converting the policy into action and setting timelines to realize the dream of a new and powerful India as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Chief Minister announced that five colleges of the state would get university status in the next two years. The five colleges are – Lakhimpur College, Nagaon College, JB Law College, Sivasagar College and Handique College.
State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Vice-Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, Narendra Kumar Taneja, UGC Chairman DP Singh, the education minister of eight north-eastern states, Nani Gopal Mahanta, education adviser to the government of Assam, stakeholders and academicians were present in the inaugural session.
