GUWAHATI: The vehicle owners owe the State Government around Rs 400 crore in the form of vehicle taxes. And the government is going to launch a massive statewide drive against vehicle tax defaulters tomorrow.
According to official sources, November 15 was the deadline set by the government for tax-defaulting vehicle owners to clear their outstanding taxes. Now the Transport Department will seize the vehicles whose owners have not paid taxes within the stipulated time and take steps to auction the vehicles, besides registering cases against the tax-defaulting vehicle owners under the Motor Vehicle Tax Act, 1936.
Speaking to The Sentinel, Assistant Commissioner of Transport Department Gautam Das said, “Vehicle owners owe the department around Rs 400 arrears in taxes, including around Rs 150 crore in Guwahati alone. These arrears taxes are mainly from commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, dumpers, tractors, mini city buses (majic), cabbies, autorickshaws, etc. We did request the vehicle owners many times to clear the arrears taxes, but to no avail.”
According to sources, many construction companies use dumpers but keep evading taxes. Many self-help groups have also procured tractors. They have also dozed vehicular taxes.
In 2022, the State Transport Department took legal action against several construction companies for evading vehicular taxes.
