GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the police personnel of the state to be friendly with innocent people but tough with criminals.

This appeal from the Chief Minister came against the backdrop of some recent incidents that tainted the image of the state police. The Chief Minister is unhappy over the incidents.

Talking to the media today, the Chief Minister said, "At the SP-level conference at Duliajan, I appealed to the police to be friendly with innocent people and tough with criminals. A few days ago, a police official misbehaved with an ACS officer. After that, traffic police personnel assaulted a bike rider on the road. The police even sent that rider to jail. The DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) himself went to jail. I told the DCP to tender an apology before the rider. I said this to make the police personnel not repeat such mistakes."

Appealing to the public, the Chief Minister said, "Point out if you see any rude behaviour from any police personnel. We will take action against erring police personnel. The mentality of the state police personnel is a bit outdated. They will take time to mend their ways. Yet again, I appeal to the police personnel to be tough with criminals and friendly with the innocent people."

When asked about the recent incident of physical assault on a bike rider, the Chief Minister said, "The video footage is under examination. We will punish the culprits."

The police administration suspended one of the two personnel in connection with the assault on a bike rider and closed another to the police reserve.
