SILCHAR: After more than one month and a week, the Cachar police, at last, swung into action after a strict stance by none other than the Chief Minister. Within two days, the police arrested four persons involved in the Bethukandi dyke breach incident. On Friday, hours after Himanta Biswa Sarma's departure, the police picked up one Kabul Khan, who was allegedly filmed damaging the dyke which resulted in a massive flood in Silchar town. On Saturday night, Cachar police arrested another person, identified as Mithu Hussain Laskar. On Sunday police confirmed the arrest of two more – Nazir Hussain Laskar and Ripon Khan.
Interestingly, Sarma on his Friday trip declared that he had ordered a CID investigation into the Bethukandi incident. A Special Task Force led by the ADGP of CID would investigate the incident. Sarma further informed the media that an FIR was lodged in this regard by the Cachar SP. The very statement of the Chief Minister was indicative enough that the Cachar police did nothing after the dyke had been breached by the 'miscreants' on May 23.
