GUWAHATI: The BJP-led alliance in the state won both the Rajya Sabha seats in Assam on Thursday. While Pabitra Margherita of the BJP secured 46 votes, UPPL candidate Rwngwra Narzary secured 44 seats, and both won. On the contrary, Congress candidate Ripun Bora secured 35 votes. The SEC cancelled the vote of one MLA.

The Opposition camp had 43 votes. With the cancellation of one vote, it was to have 42 votes under it. However, Ripun Bora secured only 35 votes. It indicates cross-voting by seven Opposition MLAs.

Earlier, the APCC urged the CEC (Chief Election Commissioner) to reject the votes of BJP MLAs Hitendra Nath Goswami, Ganesh Kumar Limbu and Sanjay Kisan, BPF MLA Durga Das Boro and Congress MLA Sashi Kanta Das. The allegation against the three BJP and one BPF MLAs was that they had shown their ballot papers publicly after casting their votes. The allegation against Sashi Kanta Das was a violation of the party whip. However, the CEC rejected the complaints from Congress. That, however, delayed the counting of votes.

The APCC first lodged their complaint against the three BJP and one BPF MLA before the Returning Officer. It also complained against Congress MLA Sashi Kanta Das before the Chief Election Officer on the charge of violating the party's whip. The APCC suspended MLA Siddique Ahmed from the primary membership of the party. Ahmed wrote 'one' on the ballot paper instead of '1' while casting his vote.

All the 126 legislators of the state came for voting.
