The BJP-led alliance in Assam secured a majority in the Deuri Autonomous Council (DAC) elections by bagging 12 seats out 22 seats that went to the polls on November 8 last.

GUWAHATI: The BJP-led alliance in Assam secured a majority in the Deuri Autonomous Council (DAC) elections by bagging 12 seats out 22 seats that went to the polls on November 8 last.

The BJP won 11 seats and the AGP won one seat. On the other hand, the ethnic-based Jimochhaya Peoples' Party (JPP) won eight seats, while the Congress won two seats.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted after the results were announced: "The resounding victory of BJP and alliance revalidates the popular trust in our government guided by vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. My deep gratitude to voters of Council area for giving us this huge mandate."

On the other hand, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah said that the BJP had mobilized massive manpower and machinery for the DAC elections and claimed that it would sweep all the 22 seats, but the results have belied this claim.
