GUWAHATI: The BJP Assam Pradesh has dropped a hint that it may not accept the NRC published on August 31 in its present form. The State unit of the party has, however, made it clear that it will have a brainstorming discussion on the NRC during September 8 and 9, 2019 when party president Amit Shah will be in the State. The discussion is aimed at taking a clear-cut stand of the party on the NRC.

A source in the State BJP said: “The recently-published NRC is no better than a waste paper. Majority of people in the State are not happy with it. We appeal to all aggrieved people in the State to get united on this issue. We’re going to a take some steps on the NRC front. We’ll meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on this issue during his forthcoming visit to the State. It’s shocking that genuine Indian citizens have been made to face trial in foreigners tribunals (FTs)?”

The BJP source further said: “How can this NRC without names of many Assamese, Bodos, Rabhas, Assamese Muslims, Karbis, Bengalis and others be a milestone?”

BJP Assam Pradesh president Ranjeet Kumar Dass was on record saying recently that after its submission to the RGI (Registrar General of India) the NRC would be a government subject, a situation that would enable the government to verify all NRC documents, besides bringing in legislations in the Assembly or amendment Bills in the Parliament. He also raised the demand for an NRC at the national level.
