GUWAHATI: The BJP has its eyes set on the Congress-held Barpeta, Nagaon and Kaliabor Lok Sabha seats, besides the independent-held Kokrajhar seat in the state.

The BJP has nine Lok Sabha seats – Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Diphu, Mangaldai, Guwahati, Silchar, Karimganj and Tezpur – under it. Since the demography in Dhubri is not in favour of the BJP, the party has kept the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat aside.

The BJP needs more seats from Assam to make it to New Delhi again in 2024. Thus, the party has deputed Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju to boost party organization in Barpeta, Nagaon and Kaliabor Lok Sabha areas. The party has deputed Union Minister Rameswar Teli to work in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat. Sonowal and Rijiju will visit Barpeta, Nagaon and Kaliabor and talk to the local populace in the booths where the BJP got fewer votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. They will also delve deep into micro assessments to ascertain why the party got fewer votes in the booths. Rijiju visited Barpeta yesterday. The party assignment for Teli in Kokrajhar is no different.

Talking to The Sentinel, State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita said, "We have nine Lok Sabha seats in Assam, and Barpeta, Nagaon, Kaliabor and Kokrajhar are our prospective targets. We have 45 lakh party members in the state. And the party strength keeps going up in the state since the membership drive is a continuous process. The BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha) has targeted to enrol five lakh more members in the state. How the State Government carries out development works under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is an open book for all in the state to see. We are confident that our Lok Sabha poll results in 2024 will be better than 2019."
