GUWAHATI: BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) and BSF (Border Security Force) of India have resolved to undertake joint efforts to curb trans-border crimes and sensitize the border populace to refrain from any crimes, including intrusion.

The four-day Director General-level coordination conference between border guards of the two countries at Dhaka concluded today.

BSF DG Pankaj Kumar Singh led the Indian side, and BGD DG Major General Shakil Ahmed led the Bangladesh side. According to BSF sources, both sides reached agreements on many issues at the conference. Both sides highlighted the importance of a coordinated border management plan in curbing the menace of smuggling contrabands such as narcotics, firearms, FICN, gold etc. They also agreed to remain cautious and steadfast in stopping smuggling through sharing real-time information and active anti-smuggling efforts.

BSF sources said both sides agreed to undertake joint efforts to lower assaults/border crimes by intensifying public awareness programmes. They also resolved to bring awareness among the local populace to help prevent border crimes. The meeting took serious note of intrusion, smuggling, human trafficking, uprooting border pillars etc. Both the parties agreed to take measures against such practices on their respective sides. The two sides agreed to adopt zero tolerance against insurgent groups/ suspected camps active on either side of the border.

The two sides mutually agreed to constructively engage the respective higher authorities for concurrence of the pending development works within 150 yards on either side of the international border. They also agreed to facilitate river-bank protection works along the common bordering rivers as approved by the Joint River Commission.

BSF and BGB hold such conferences twice a year – once in India and once in Bangladesh. The border guarding forces of both countries have established robust systems through which they ensure cooperation in border guarding and management.
