GUWAHATI: The sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DIR VAC) caught Assistant Commissioner of Tax Minakshi Kakati Kalita at Kar Bhawan in Guwahati today while accepting bribes of Rs 4,000.

This was the second bribery case of the day, with the incident taking place barely a few hours after a lat mandal, Mahendra Nath, was arrested in Nagarbera of the Kamrup district by the sleuths of the same directorate.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption had received a complaint that alleged Minakshi Kakati Kalita was demanding Rs 10,000 for reactivating GST online functions. She was later ready to accept Rs. 8,000.

Following the tip-off, the officials laid a trap to catch the Assistant Commissioner of state tax red-handed while accepting the amount in the presence of independent witnesses. The trap laid yielded results.

The sleuths registered a case (36/2023 U/S 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018) against Minakshi Kakati Kalita.

Following her arrest, a team from DIR VAC raided the residence of the tax official and recovered an amount of more than Rs 65 lakhs.
