Burha Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra Basistha Dev Sarma laid to rest; CM pays tribute

BARPETA: Burha Xatriya (Xatradhikar) of Barpeta Xatra, one of the main pillars of Xatriya culture of Barpeta, and Srimanta Sankardeva awardee, Basistha Dev Sarma's funeral was completed today with Xatriya tradition and State honour by the Assam Government.

He was given a 21-gun salute in the presence of thousands of his devotees. His body was cremated after the morning prasanga in the eastern part of Barpeta Xatra and his son, Bhaskar Dev Sarma completed the rituals. Thousands of people gathered to pay tribute to this prominent personality.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Xatradhikar of Majuli's Kamalabari Xatra, ministers Keshab Mahanta, Dr Ranoj Pegu and Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Pramod Boro, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Bora and various dignitaries, along with thousands of his devotees, gathered to pay tribute to the doyen of Xatriya culture.

Offering his tribute, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "There is great emptiness in the sad demise of this great personality. A follower of Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhabdeva, prominent pillar of Xatriya culture and tradition, Basistha Dev Sarma's life and works will remain as an inspiration for others."
