GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has reacted sharply to the recent statement of the BJP national president JP Nadda on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), and asserted that the legislation will not be acceptable to the indigenous people of the State.

While speaking at a meeting in Siliguri (West Bengal) recently, Nadda said that the execution of CAA has been delayed due to the current pandemic situation and asserted that the law will be implemented soon.

"Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CAA implementation got delayed. But as the situation is slowing improving, the work has started. The rules are now being framed, it will be implemented very soon," Nadda told some social groups that included the dalits, Gorkhas, Rajbanshis and other ethnic communities during the meeting at Siliguri.

AASU's chief advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya told The Sentinel that the CAA is a clear violation of the historic Assam Accord, adding that the legislation will help in protecting the illegal foreigners. "The Act is an assault on the secular fabric of our Constitution," he said.

Dr Bhattacharjya, who is also the advisor of the North East Students' Organization (NESO) said that the CAA poses threat not only to Assam but also the entire North East. "We reiterate our demand for scrapping the CAA," said Dr Bhattacharjya.
