GUWAHATI: State Cabinet today approved Rs 475 crore for the setting up of nine model women colleges, six government model colleges and three engineering colleges.

The Cabinet also decided to reserve 50 per cent wards for women candidates in the GMC and municipal board elections in the state. The reservation of wards for women will be for ten years against the existing five years.

As a mark of respect to first Assam Agitation martyr Khargeswar Talukdar, the government made Bhabanipur Block with its headquarters at Sarupeta.

The Cabinet simplified the ease-of-doing-business policy. If an entrepreneur wants to set up an industrial unit, he will not have to run after various departments for various works. He will have to submit everything to a designated officer to be appointed by the government. The designated officer will have to clear all permissions within a month.

The Cabinet, in principle, agreed the state government, in collaboration with IIT-Guwahati, will try to set up a super speciality hospital. The hospital will have the research of medicines and techno-innovation as its thrust areas.

The Cabinet finalized government jobs for the wife of Indreswar Bora and the sister of Parinita Das. Bora and Das lost their lives in the recent Majuli boat capsize in the Brahmaputra.

The Cabinet brought a few amendments to the departmental procurement policy for the safeguards of local small and micro industries. Departments will prefer local units for supplies even if their rates are 20 per cent more than that of units from outside Assam.
