GUWAHATI: For creation of a new district to be named as 'Bajali', the Assam government has sought the 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) from the Registrar General of India (RGI), which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

At present, Bajali is a Civil subdivision under Barpeta district.

Sources in the General Administration Department (GAD) said that the move has been made because of a restriction from the RGI. The bar had disallowed any process leading to the formation of any district especially during the period when the Census operation is on. The Census process under the RGI was slated to be held from April, 2020. However, the sudden situation over COVID-19 compelled the authorities to defer the process.

Meanwhile, the State Cabinet had already decided to form the new district of Bajali. The State Finance Department also sanctioned creation of posts for the new administrative division.

At present, the State has 33 districts.
