GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the people to boost work culture instead of forcible collection of donations to make the state scale new heights of progress and prosperity.

The Chief Minister said this in the aftermath of responses that keep coming from various quarters after the State government had made public that it would bring a bill to curb the forcible collection of donations.

The Chief Minister said, "Why should we collect donations from non-Assamese businessmen for holding the Bihu and other functions? We need to involve non-Assamese businessmen in our functions, but without collecting donations from them. We can hold Bihu functions, but not lavishly so that we don't have to collect donations from others."

Laying stress on work culture, the Chief Minister said, "A work-shy community cannot make the state progress just by shouting the 'Jai Ai Asom' slogan. Most of the essential commodities come to the state from outside. We don't produce them in the state. We only talk the talk, but not walk the walk. If we only collect donations without doing anything ourselves, we will make the state a burden for the country. We need to cultivate the work culture. We need to make Assam self-reliant. I appeal to all to contribute positively in this direction."
