GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal are in a war of words over the merger of schools in Assam.

Assam Government has decided to merge 34 schools with zero success rates in the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination with nearby schools. Commenting on this yesterday, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal said, "The closure of schools is not the solution. The country needs more schools. Instead of closing schools, the government should improve the institutions to impart better education."

Reacting to the statement, Assam Chief Minister Sarma said, "As usual, you commented on something without homework. Since my days as Education Minister, till now, please note, that Assam has established/taken over 8,610 new schools. How many new schools have Delhi Government started in the last seven years? Curious to know Delhi's figure."

Chief Minister Sarma also said, "The State Government set up 81 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, 38 Adharsha Vidyalayas, 97 Tea Garden Model Schools and three Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Avashik Vidyalayas. Apart from these, the State government provincialized 6,802 elementary and 1589 secondary schools since 2013."
