GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been visiting breached embankments and taking stock of the situation for last few days. His thrust is on the scientific embankment construction to ensure durability.

The Chief Minister today visited the Bagaribari area in the Tamulpur district. He had to reach the spot by riding a Scooty, covering a distance of seven km. Since the embankment is not motorable, the Chief Minister rode a Scooty. He visited the embankment breached by the Puthimari river.

He said, "Repair of this embankment will not serve any purpose. We will build a 12-km embankment scientifically with the help of IIT-Guwahati. It is to stop recurrence of such breaches in future."

In the past few days, the Chief Minister visited several flood-affected areas and heard the problems of the affected people from the horses' mouths. He instructed the district administrations to address the grievances immediately.

It seems that the Chief Minister is trying to delve deep into the problem of floods by visiting affected areas during the deluge and post-flood periods. He is trying to unearth what problems the engineers of the Water Resources Department face. He wants to get it across to the engineers to opt for scientific and lasting solutions to flood-related problems rather than spending crores of rupees for temporary and short-term measures.
