GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told government officers to work with dedication to boost revenue earning. He assured the officers of providing them with all cooperation to perform to the fullest capacity.

The Chief Minister reviewed the activities of the tax department. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog was also present at the meeting. "Revenue collection through taxes is the most important source of government income. The government has taken various measures for nation-building with this revenue. So, it is time to focus on being able to collect taxes we owe the government," the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister directed the officers concerned to perform their duties with devotion. "We are committed to creating expeditious, transparent and effective taxation systems to ensure the judicious flow of revenue," he said. The Chief Minister suggested the adoption of better revenue-earning systems prevalent in other states.

The State government earns only around 30 per cent of the total budget estimate from own sources. This 30 per cent can hardly meet the salary and pension expenditure of the government. The prime sources of revenue in the state are the Transport, Excise, Agriculture, Forest etc. departments, apart from GST and VAT. Revenue earning got a boost in the past few years due to the plugging of loopholes in the system. The online system has also helped block many loopholes in the system.
