GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to ensure that the CCTV cameras in hospitals are connected to the nearest Police Stations.
In this regard, the Court stated, "Mere installation of CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) cameras in the hospitals is not enough." The Bench of Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak also directed the Assam Government to apprise the Court about further progress in the matter within 10 days.
The Court made this observation on Friday while hearing two petitions seeking protection of doctors in the present pandemic time.
The matter has been taken up through video conferencing. The petitions were PIL (Public Interest Litigation) 33/2021 and PIL (Suo Moto) 4/2021.
On the other hand, Advocate General D. Saikia apprised the Bench that almost all the government medical colleges and the district government hospitals are having CC TV cameras. He added, "But there are some government hospitals, including some 'Model Hospitals', where the CC TV cameras are yet to be installed".
The next hearing on the case will be on August 16, 2021.
It may be mentioned that during the course of the previous hearing, the Advocate General had informed the Court that the police have already completed its investigation and a charge-sheet was also filed regarding the incident that had occurred on June 1, 2021, wherein some medical personnel were attacked. The Court was also informed that 24 persons have been already arrested so far.
