GUWAHATI: It's a good sign in the State that the COVID-19 positivity rate has been declining for the past few days. On Sunday day, the positivity rate fell to 3.03 per cent and the death toll to 37.

Exactly a month back on May 6, 2021, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the State was 8.04 per cent. The new COVID cases detected on that day was 4,936. However, on June 6, 2021, the number of COVID-19 positive case cases declined to 2,228.

For an intensified fight against the COVID-19, an additional 550 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds are coming up in Guwahati in the next 15 days.

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya said, "The COVID-19 infection is coming down slowly in the past few days in Guwahati. A month back on May 6 as many as 1,353 new COVID-19 cases were detected in Kamrup(M). However, today the number of new COVID-19 cases in the district came down to 309.

"However, the would-be COVID-19 situation in the State depends largely on the behaviour of the people. If the people come out in hordes and don't maintain social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols, the situation will deteriorate further. The people have to follow COVID-19-appropriate behaviour.

"As a precautionary measure, the Health Department is installing 550 additional ICU beds in the GMCH and other places in Guwahati within the next 15 days. While 200 ICU beds are being installed in the parking area of the GMCH, 100 ICU beds and 200 oxygen beds are being installed at Sarusajai by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization)."
