GUWAHATI: The State government feels that even now a large number of people in the State have not been wearing face masks – religiously. This feeling has prompted the State government to start a pilot project from Thursday to bring about awareness among the masses.

It was only on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminded the people of the country to follow COVID-19 protocol to the letter.

Taking the ground reality in the State into consideration, the State government has decided to launch the pilot project. On behalf of the State government, the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) will carry out the pilot project and make the people aware of the consequences of not wearing face mask.

Talking to The Sentinel, ASDMA CEO M.S. Manivannan said, "We're launching the pilot project in five districts – Kamrup (M), Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tinsukia and Barpeta – on Thursday. Initially, each of the five districts will have a car for announcing the COVID-19 protocols. The prime objectives of the pilot project are to ensure that the people wear face mask and keep themselves and others safe from the virus. The same car will be used for selling subsidized and reusable face masks at Rs 10 per piece. Honourable State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan will launch the pilot project on Thursday."

The local police will extend a helping hand to the ASDMA personnel to carry out the awareness drive.
