GUWAHATI: The Covid-19 positivity rate is declining in the state where the death toll is still rising. And the State Health Department is worried about this. Even more disturbing is that 'most of the Covid deaths in the state are comorbid patients who have taken double vaccine doses'. According to official sources, the Covid-19 positivity rate was 12.92 per cent on January 20. It, however, declined to 6.41 per cent (nearly 50 per cent fall) on January 29. Covid-19 claimed 18 lives daily on average in the state during this period.

According to sources, Covid-19 claimed 43 lives from January 9-23 in the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) alone. Surprisingly, 31 of the 43 Covid deceased had taken double vaccine doses. Five of the remaining victims took one vaccine dose, and five others took no vaccine. The vaccine status of the other two deceased is not known. However, all the 31 persons who died of Covid with double vaccine dose were comorbid patients. Eighteen of the 43 lives lost in the GMCH from January 20-29 within 24 hours of their admission into the hospital.

Health department sources consider it a positive sign that 'the rising trend of the Covid positivity rate in the state has now taken the falling trend'. The department feels it 'as an achievement that it has reversed the Covid trend without having to declare any lockdown'. However, the department is still on its toes as the active Covid cases in the state were 28,788 till January 29. Now, the department has its eyes set on minimizing the death toll and bringing the positivity rate within two per cent.
