Curtain down on final phase of Assam Assembly poll campaign

With the ECI bringing down the curtain on campaign for the third and final phase of the State Assembly poll at 6 pm on Sunday

GUWAHATI: With the ECI (Election Commission of India) bringing down the curtain on campaign for the third and final phase of the State Assembly poll at 6 pm on Sunday, 40 Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) are set to go for poll on April 6, 2021.

In this phase, 79,19,641 electors –40,11,539 males, 39,07,963 females and 139 transgender – are to decide the fates of 337 candidates – 312 males and 25 females –in 12 lower Assam districts, including Kamrup (M).

While Dispur LAC has the highest number of 4,11,636 electors, Dharmapur LAC has the lowest number of 1,41,592 voters that are going to poll in this phase. Gauhati West LAC has the highest number of 15 candidates and Boko LAC has the lowest number of three candidates. The total number of polling stations in this phase is 11,401.

Among the prominent political parties, the Congress has fielded the highest number of 24 candidates in the LACs that are going to poll in this phase. It is followed by 22 by the AJP (Assam Jatiya Parishad), 20 by the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), 19 by the JD-U (Janata Dal-United), 13 by the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), 12 by the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front), 8 by the BPF (Bodoland People's Front), 8 by the UPPL (United People's Party, Liberal), 3 by the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) and 1 by the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxists), bedsides 126 independent candidates.

Some of the prominent BJP candidates in this phase of poll are – Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari, Siddhartha Bhattacharya from Gauhati East, Atul Bora from Dispur, Chandra Mohan Patowary from Dharmapur and Ranjeet Kumar Dass from Patacharkuchi.

From the AGP, there are Phani Bushan Choudhury from Bongaigaon, Ramendra Narayan Kalita from Gauhati West, Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita from Chaygaon, Bhupen Roy from Abhayapuri North, Jyoti Prasad Das from Boko and Gunindra Nath Das from Barpeta.

Major faces from the Congress are Nandita Das from Boko, Rekibuddin Ahmed from Chaygaon, Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam from Goalpara East, Abdul Rashid Mandal from Goalpara West, Wazed Ali Choudhury from South Salmara and Sherman Ali Ahmed from Baghbar.

Prominent BPF faces in this phase of poll are – Chandan Brahma from Sidli, Pramila Rani Brahma from Kokrajhar East and Rabiram Narzary from Kokrajhar West.

The AJP has Pabindra Deka from Patacharkuchi, Adip Kumar Phukan from Gauhati East and Dulu Ahmed from Hajo.

UPPL has Lawrence Islary from Kokrajhar East.
