GUWAHATI: The Jamtara district in Jharkhand is known for cybercriminals. And Moirabari and Lahorighat in the Morigaon district in Assam do not lag behind Jamtara for this wrong reason. When it comes to the volume of money involved in cybercrimes, the Morigaon district of Assam is much ahead of Jamtara.

The Morigaon police arrested over 50 cybercriminals in the past five months and seized hundreds of other incriminating documents from them.

According to police sources, the criminals make fake PAN cards that enable them to get Aadhaar cards and open bank accounts. Identity theft is a regular practice on the part of cybercriminals active in the state. With the help of fake PAN and Aadhaar cards, they take loans in the names of others from establishments like L&T Finance, Dhani App, etc. that provide loans online. This is not all. With the help of their fake PAN and Aadhaar cards, they avail of the benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), depriving the genuine farmers of the state, police sources said.

On the trail of a case filed at the Moirabari Police Station in 2022, the Morigaon Police started a massive drive that led to the revelation of large-scale cybercrimes in the district. The forgery involves crores of rupees. Their activities are not confined to Assam alone. Police from other states also arrested cybercriminals from the Morigaon district in Assam.

Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, and Nagaon districts are also infamous for the notoriety of cybercrimes.
