GUWAHATI: Under the Electronic Foreigners Tribunal (e-FT) project, all data and relevant documents related to the ongoing cases in the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) of Assam have been digitized.

Some years ago, the Gauhati High Court had directed the Assam Government to prepare a common digital database of all ongoing and disposed cases in the FTs so that all government agencies like the border police, Central and State governments, etc. can have access to this digital platform where they can get all necessary information on issues related to illegal foreigners and doubtful citizens.

After the court’s order, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) gave the go-ahead to set up the e-FT. The MHA also sanctioned Rs 99 crore for this project. Initially, the pilot project of e-FT was started in some districts by the State Home and Political Department through the Border Police wing of Assam Police. But now, data and relevant documents related to all ongoing cases in FTs across the State have been digitized.

As on March 31, 2023, there were 1,04, 332 ongoing cases in 100 FTs of Assam. In the next phase of the e-FT project, data and relevant documents of all cases that have been disposed of by the FTs will be digitized. As on March 31, 2023, the FTs in Assam had disposed of 3,28,601 cases.
